This interactive training webinar is targeted to public health and primary care practitioners and others involved in planning or facilitating food literacy programs. Significant changes in the food environment, eating behaviours, and food skills, have increased the use of more processed foods. This trend has been linked to higher rates of diet-related chronic disease. Improving food literacy may improve eating behaviours and diet quality.  Food literacy has emerged as a concept in both academic literature and practice-based research and may influence eating patterns, highlighting the interconnectivity among food, health and the environment. In 2016, a team of public health professionals started a research project to examine food literacy in more depth and are developing a tool to measure food literacy and test it with priority populations.

This webinar will provide background on the process used to identify and prioritize the key attributes of food literacy and the development of a comprehensive food literacy framework.  Participants will be engaged in learning how to apply this comprehensive food literacy framework to their program planning through real case scenarios.   Next steps for developing a measurement tool to assess the impact of food literacy programs will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
1. To learn about the key attributes of food literacy and how they are defined using common language.
2. To understand how the key food literacy attributes are interconnected when addressing healthy eating.
3. To apply the food literacy attributes as a framework in your work in food literacy program planning and evaluation.
