Food Literacy: Shaping the Health of Children and Youth

Date: June 9th, 2020

Nutrition Connections co-hosted this workshop with Dr. Jess Hanes with support from a Canadian Institutes of Health knowledge and dissemination grant, with additional support from The Helderleigh Foundation.  Our goal was to bring researchers, program implementors and others together to identify priorities to shape the food literacy agenda for research, policy and practice in Canada. Activities included a pre-workshop survey and workshop designed to initiate a plan to advance food literacy priorities through collaborative and collective action starting in 2020 and beyond. The workshop was attended by 50 people including representatives of government and non-government organizations, dietitians, students, and funders. A number of critical food literacy research, policy and program priorities were identified. A food literacy network, that could be centrally coordinated by Nutrition Connections was identified as a potential opportunity to build consensus and create actionable initiatives to advance the top food literacy priorities identified to benefit the health and well-being of children, youth and families.
