How Nutrition, Activity and Physical Environment Affect Children’s Ability to Focus & Self-Regulate

Date: November 9th, 2017

Research indicates that enabling children with self-regulation skills impacts their emotional well being which positions them to better succeed academically. Behavior is not only greatly impacted by food choices but also the opportunity for exercise and their physical environment. Participants will be provided with practical strategies to optimize readiness for learning in the classroom and at home using the NAP challenge: Nutrition, Activity and Physical environment checklist.

About the presenters:

Paola Azzuolo (Occupational Therapist, All Kids Can Fly) is a mother of four adult children with over 30 years of experience as an occupational therapist.  She started her career in 1984 in adult mental health.  Since 1998, she has been working in paediatrics and loving it, as it is a coming together of the whole person. She has had the privilege of working with children from ages 0 – 7 in a children’s treatment centre.  She worked on the feeding team and the oral motor team. Presently, she is the owner /operator of All Kids Can Fly, which offers home-based occupational therapy services to children in the Peel and Halton region.

Anna Carpino-Mongeon (Registered Dietitian and Ontario Certified Teacher, All Kids Can Fly) has been providing nutritional care and counselling to patients of all ages and their families, across varied states of health and disease, since 1992.  Her passion for learning and teaching continued to grow and manifested itself in opportunities to share knowledge and experience with colleagues and students entering the healthcare field. The natural progression to acquiring her Bachelor of Education, in 2013, was fuelled by volunteer work with children in areas of scouting, catechesis, classroom work, as well as raising her four children.
