Powering Off: Re-thinking Screen Time & Sedentary Behaviour Through Public Health

This webinar will focus on opportunities for public health professionals to learn new skills in limiting screen usage while promoting interventions to decrease sedentary behaviours.

Through this webinar health professionals will learn about province-wide interventions that have been applied in homes, communities and schools, address the Canadian 24-Hour Movement guidelines, appreciate the merits of the Ontario Society of Physical Activity Promoters in Public Health, and learn practical tips in promoting active participation from adult role modeling to address sedentary behaviours.

In this session we’ll explore:

  • The Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for children ages 0-4 and 5-17
  • Health concerns associated with increased exposure to screen time
  • Province-wide interventions through the Healthy Kids Community Challenge (HKCC) Theme 4 Power Off and Play! campaign
  • The merits of the Ontario Society of Physical Activity Promoters in Public Health
  • How conducting adult role modeling is effective in promoting active participation and decreased sedentary behaviours across the life span
  • How to engage adults as active participants in healthy active living
  • The attributes of nutritional literacy in promoting healthy lifestyles

Presenters

Lynn Roblin, MSc. RD, Senior Policy Consultant, Nutrition Resource Centre – Ontario Public Health Association

Lynn Roblin is a Registered Dietitian and Senior Policy Consultant for the Nutrition Resource Centre where she focuses on building capacity and exchanging knowledge related to healthy eating, food literacy, and food and nutrition policies and interventions at the local and provincial level. Lynn has worked in public health and as a consultant developing healthy eating resources for consumers and health intermediaries for Dietitians of Canada, several Ontario ministries and Health Canada. She has co-authored several cookbooks as well as the Ontario Food and Nutrition Strategy. Lynn graduated from the University of Guelph with a BASc in Applied Human Nutrition and a MSc in Human Kinetics.

Meaghan Van Hooren Wright, BASc, MPH, Coordinator, Global Health – McMaster University & Part-time Faculty, School of Academic Studies – St. Clair College

Meaghan Van Hooren Wright is a Coordinator in the Global Health Office at McMaster University where she’s worked for the past 11 years. She’s also beginning a new faculty position in the School of Academic Studies at St. Clair College Chatham. Recently, she completed her Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Waterloo where she became actively involved in assessing the impact of screens on children and youth, together with her colleagues from the Screen Time Team, UW. Prior to McMaster, Meaghan worked as a research assistant at institutions in Scotland and South Korea, and completed an internship at the World Health Organization.

Rachael Shaffer RN, BSCN, MPH, Public Health Nurse, Healthy Living – Thunder Bay District Health Unit

Rachael Shaffer is a Public Health Nurse at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. Her portfolio focuses on Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour, Sleep and Worksite Health Promotion. Rachael is the Chair of the OSPAPPH Sedentary Behaviour Work Group, and also sits on the OSPAPPH Sleep Work Group. Rachael is passionate about physical activity, and is an avid runner herself!
