Exploring Food Literacy and Dietary Resilience in Youth

NRC is gearing up for our Fall Forum with this new webinar as part of our Unpacking Food Literacy series. This series is designed to capture promising and best practices in food literacy program delivery, described by researchers and community practitioners about their communities and target populations.
This presentation will take you on a journey that will explore the concept of food literacy and dietary resilience as it relates to young people. It will pay particular attention to working with young people living with disadvantage.
Participants will hear from an international expert on food literacy who will share learnings from research with youth about defining food literacy and understanding their relationships with and perspectives of food. This session is intended to help participants to:
- understand how youth navigate the complex food environment;
- determine what being “good with food” means, and if this changes depending on context;
- find out where young people learn about food, and if necessity is really the “mother of invention”;
- explore their own preconceived notions about food literacy and what it means to youth;
- determine what the outcomes of developing food literacy are and what we want as health professionals; and
- provide food for thought when planning food literacy interventions for youth.
About our Presenter:
Danielle Gallegos (BSc., Grad Dip Diet & Nut., PhD, FDAA)
Danielle Gallegos is a social nutritionist and Professor at Queensland University of Technology where she is the discipline leader for nutrition and dietetics and the Director for International Engagement and Recruitment. She currently coordinates Dietetic Honours students. She is a Fellow of the Dietitians Association of Australia and has worked in all areas of nutrition and dietetics including acute care, foodservice, private practice and for the last 15 years in public health nutrition. She teaches public and community nutrition and undertakes research related to the nexus between nutrition and social justice. Her special areas of interest are developing nutrition and dietetics as a profession in Vietnam, food security, food literacy and supporting breastfeeding through the use of innovative technologies. She is currently supervising 10 PhD students, three of whom are from Vietnam.
